The brouhaha about 'Youth'

Varying estimates in all the reading these days point to this mass of 'youth' that is set to shape or drive the destiny of our great country. There is also evidence to suggest that this mass of youth has also helped in the transformation of many other nations in the history of the world economy like Japan and USA. I agree with most of that but where I see the strength of that argument depleting in the case of our great country is in the quality of this youth.

As I have been reading these pieces of truth over the past couple of months I have decided to go an an exploration of my own. While consumer surveys and psychographic research studies are a great source of information (depending on what you want to do with them), there is mine of insights in the local mall, evesdropping a motley group at McDonalds or just surfing through the multitude of youth reality shows on TV - aka MTV roadies and Bindass date trap etc. Through this exploration I have managed to chance upon the motivations and aspirations of this phenomenon but I realise that I have only scratched the surface.

Without much ado, I believe that a distrubing number of youth today and more so in the larger cities are fragile, disoriented and misdirected. Agreed the zietgeist is about finding your passions and pursuing them but that has become an excuse for gross misconduct. They drive drinking beer in their hands and throw them on the streets, they display thier ignorance on national TV, they mistake 3G for 3D. In an environment of conspicuous consumption, they seem to have lost sight of the basics.

Dealing with failure

The last few months have been spent mostly in a certain obsessive activity. I have learnt that its ok to be ambitious but when it starts to hurt is when it becomes obessesion. It has the ability to diminsh your ability to deal with failure and failure is an integral part of life. Or at least life after 25.

The next few months will be spent in analysing this obsession. For the large part this analysis will focus on the tradeoffs of this obsession and not so much the results of the obession. This post is a mere attempt to reflect on my state of mind at this point. No point will be made here. Much like the rest of this blog it will go on to serve as an important barometer of the development (or so I might presume) of thought.
